IT support & managed IT services in Vernon

Our managed IT service for Vernon is delivered remote-first from Greater Vancouver. Helpdesk, servers, Microsoft 365, backups, patching and security monitoring are handled over the network, which is how most of this work gets done now regardless of address. We do not pretend we can be at your door this afternoon. On-site attendance is planned in advance and booked as a block of work, for the things that need hands on equipment — a server swap, an office fit-out, a network rebuild. For structured cabling we subcontract a local trade.

IT priorities for Vernon businesses

  • Backups that survive an evacuation order, not just a failed drive — tested restores, with one copy held off-site and outside the Okanagan.
  • A documented way for staff to work from anywhere, so a smoke day or a highway closure does not stop the business.
  • Remote monitoring and patching on every machine, including the ones at SilverStar and Predator Ridge that nobody walks past.
  • Cooling and clean power for any on-premises server, which gets tested hard in an Okanagan summer.
  • Seasonal staff handled properly — accounts created quickly, and revoked the week tourism and orchard crews turn over.

Business districts

  • Downtown Vernon (30th Avenue)
  • Village Green Centre area, 27th Street and 48th Avenue
  • Anderson Way north-end commercial strip
  • Silver Star Gateway Business Park
  • Kalamalka Lake Road industrial corridor
  • Okanagan Landing
  • Predator Ridge
  • SilverStar Mountain Resort village

What shapes IT here

Vernon is roughly 440 kilometres from the Lower Mainland by road, over the Coquihalla. That road is not a guarantee. The November 2021 atmospheric river washed out bridges between Hope and Merritt and closed Highway 5 to general traffic until January 2022. Wildfire is the other recurring disruption: the White Rock Lake fire put most of Vernon under evacuation alert in August 2021, and smoke seasons now arrive most summers. Vernon Creek and BX Creek both flooded in 2017 and 2018, and the city has since mapped those floodplains. Inside the city, fibre and cable are widely available. Out along Westside Road and the BX, service thins quickly.

Built around seasons and wildfire risk

In the Okanagan, Thompson and Kootenays the recurring IT jobs are seasonal account churn and continuity. We automate onboarding and offboarding so access ends when employment does, keep backups off site and reachable, and make sure your team could work from another town for a week. Support is remote; physical work is planned in advance rather than promised same-day.

Process

How it works

  1. Consultation

A conversation about your team, systems and pain points, and what you want technology to do for the business.

  2. Assessment & onboarding

We document every device, account and licence, secure admin access and fix the urgent risks first.

  3. Day-to-day support

Help desk, monitoring, patching and backups run in the background while your team gets on with work.

  4. Regular planning

Periodic reviews of what's working, upcoming renewals and replacements, and a budget you can plan around.

Pricing

How pricing works

Managed IT agreements are typically priced per user or per device each month, based on the services included. After an assessment, we put the scope and monthly price in writing, including what counts as a separate project.

Software licences such as Microsoft 365 and any hardware are listed separately from the support fee, so you can see exactly what each costs. Our guide to managed IT services costs explains the common pricing models.

  • Number of users and devices
  • Servers, sites and network equipment to manage
  • Security and backup tools included
  • Compliance or industry requirements
  • How much on-site support you need
  • Clean-up needed during onboarding

FAQ

Managed IT Services in Vernon: questions

You are based in Greater Vancouver. How does that actually work for a business in Vernon?

Honestly, and with the distance stated up front. Day-to-day support is remote: helpdesk, Microsoft 365, servers, backups, security monitoring and most project work happen over the network, which is how the majority of IT is delivered now regardless of address. What Vernon does not get from us is a same-day call-out. It is a long drive from the coast over the Coquihalla, so on-site attendance is arranged in advance and grouped into a planned visit. For urgent physical work, such as a dead switch or a cabling fault, we brief a local trade and direct them remotely.

What happens to our IT if the office is under an evacuation alert?

That is a real question here. The White Rock Lake fire put most of Vernon on evacuation alert in August 2021, and smoke seasons arrive most summers. What matters is whether the business can keep operating from somewhere else at short notice. In practice that means mail and files in Microsoft 365 rather than only on a server in the office, a tested restore for anything still on-premises, laptops staff can take with them, and phones that follow people. We set that up as ordinary managed IT, not as an emergency add-on. The small business cybersecurity checklist covers the rest.

Our site is outside the city, up the BX or along Westside Road. Does remote support still work?

Usually, but it depends on the circuit. Inside Vernon, fibre and cable are widely available and remote support behaves the same as it would anywhere. Once you are out along Westside Road, the BX or toward Lumby, connections thin out and some properties are still on fixed wireless or satellite. A federal and provincial fibre build is extending service into parts of rural Vernon, Coldstream and the Westside Road corridor, but it is not finished. Where bandwidth is poor we design around it — local caching, scheduled rather than continuous backups, and a second connection for failover.

What's included in managed IT services?

Typically a help desk for staff, device management and patching, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace administration, security tools, backups, vendor coordination and regular planning. Projects such as office moves, server replacements or migrations are usually scoped separately. Every agreement we write lists exactly what's covered.

What is a managed service provider (MSP)?

A managed service provider is an outside company that takes ongoing responsibility for your IT for a monthly fee — help desk, security, device management, backups and Microsoft 365 — instead of billing by the hour when something breaks. The point is that the provider is paid to prevent problems, not to fix them after the fact. For most small businesses an MSP is the IT department they would otherwise have to hire.

How is managed IT different from calling someone when something breaks?

Break-fix support is paid by the hour when there's a problem, so nobody is responsible for preventing the next one. Managed IT covers ongoing maintenance, security and support for a monthly fee, which makes costs predictable and rewards fewer problems. Our managed IT vs. break-fix guide covers when each makes sense.

Can you work alongside our in-house IT person?

Yes. Many growing companies have one internal IT person who is stretched thin. We can take on the help desk, security tooling, after-hours projects or strategic planning, while they stay focused on the work only an insider can do.
