IT services & IT consulting in Kelowna

Kelowna is the largest business centre in the BC Interior, with employers spread across health care, post-secondary education, technology, agriculture and construction. What businesses here need from IT is something that keeps working on its own, because the nearest specialist is often a four-hour drive away.

Doing business in Kelowna

Kelowna is the largest city in the BC Interior and the service centre for the Central Okanagan. Health care anchors it. Interior Health is headquartered here and operates Kelowna General Hospital, the tertiary referral hospital for the Interior. UBC Okanagan beside the airport and Okanagan College on KLO Road are both major employers. A technology sector has grown around downtown's Cultural District, where the Kelowna Innovation Centre and Accelerate Okanagan sit. Aviation is substantial: Kelowna International Airport is city-owned and among the busiest in Canada, with aircraft maintenance work on its grounds. Agriculture remains central but is under strain, and the grower-owned BC Tree Fruits Cooperative, based in Kelowna, ceased operations in 2024. Wine, tourism, construction and professional services fill out the rest.

Technology

What shapes IT here

Kelowna sits on the east shore of Okanagan Lake in a semi-arid valley, and two conditions genuinely change how IT is planned. The first is fire. The McDougall Creek wildfire in August 2023 crossed the lake into north Kelowna and Lake Country and put tens of thousands of people under evacuation order at short notice. Smoke seasons close offices without burning anything. The second is distance. Greater Vancouver is roughly four hours away over the Coquihalla, and the November 2021 atmospheric river closed that highway for weeks. Summer heat is severe — the June 2021 heat dome set records across the valley — and heat is hard on equipment kept in unventilated cupboards. Connectivity is good in the city and thins out on the rural edges toward Joe Rich and Ellison.

How we help local businesses

IT support & managed IT in Kelowna

We support Kelowna businesses remotely from Greater Vancouver. Helpdesk, patching, monitoring, backups, Microsoft 365, servers and security work are all handled over the network, which is how most IT is delivered now regardless of address. On-site attendance is planned in advance rather than dispatched the same day, because it is a long drive each way. When a job needs hands on equipment, we schedule the visit or subcontract a local trade for cabling and physical installs. More on managed IT services.

  • Remote hands arranged before you need them — a named Kelowna electrician or cabling contractor agreed while nothing is broken, not found in a panic
  • Off-site backups that are tested by restoring, so an evacuation alert is a disruption rather than a data loss
  • Devices enrolled in Intune or Autopilot, so a replacement laptop bought locally can be set up without a technician in the room

AI consulting in Kelowna

Most useful AI work in Kelowna is unglamorous. A winery answering the same tasting-room questions all summer, a property manager sorting maintenance requests, a construction firm pulling quantities out of drawings, a clinic handling intake paperwork — these are process problems with a language model attached, not research projects. We start by finding where staff retype the same information, then work out whether a tool is worth building at all. More on AI consulting.

  • Tasting room and tour enquiries answered from your own hours, pricing, group policies and seasonal closures, so front-of-house staff are not retyping the same reply all summer
  • Orchard and vineyard record-keeping: turning spray logs, harvest notes and field observations into searchable records instead of a binder in a truck
  • Construction and trades estimating: pulling scope and quantities out of drawings and specification PDFs so estimators start from a draft rather than a blank page

Web design in Kelowna

Kelowna businesses sell in several directions at once. Some serve the valley's own population, which has grown quickly. Some sell to visitors, and tourism, wine and hospitality all depend on people choosing before they arrive. Some sell nationally or further, particularly software firms and the manufacturers near the airport. A site has to make sense to a local, to a visitor planning a trip, and to a buyer who will never see the Okanagan. More on web design.

FAQ

Technology services in Kelowna: questions

Are you actually based in Kelowna?

No. We are based in Greater Vancouver and support Kelowna businesses remotely. That covers nearly all of the work — helpdesk, Microsoft 365, servers, cloud, security monitoring, backups and network changes are all done over the network. What it does not cover is someone arriving within the hour to swap a failed switch. When work needs hands on equipment, we plan the visit in advance or subcontract a local trade in the Okanagan. We would rather say that plainly than imply an office on Harvey Avenue that does not exist.

What happens if our server fails and nobody can get there?

Most failures do not need someone in the room, which is why remote support works at this distance. The ones that do need planning ahead of time. We document configuration, keep warranties and firmware current, and set up remote access that does not depend on the device that failed. For hardware faults we use the manufacturer's on-site warranty where one exists, and otherwise arrange a local technician. The honest answer is that if your business cannot tolerate hardware being down for a day, the fix is fewer on-premise dependencies. Moving file shares and line-of-business systems to cloud services removes the trip entirely.

Does being in the Interior change our security risk?

Not the threat itself. Phishing and stolen credentials reach Kelowna exactly as fast as they reach Vancouver, and no attacker cares which side of the Coquihalla you are on. What changes is recovery. If your office is under an evacuation alert and your only backup is a drive in the server cupboard, distance suddenly matters a great deal. We treat off-site backups and a documented way for staff to work from anywhere as security controls rather than conveniences. The small business cybersecurity checklist covers the rest of the groundwork.

Is AI worth it for a business our size in the Okanagan?

Sometimes. The test is whether you have a repetitive task that is mostly reading and writing. Seasonal businesses here often have a clear case, because summer enquiry volume arrives all at once and hiring for a short peak is expensive. Businesses with a steady year-round workload usually get more from fixing their Microsoft 365 setup first. We will tell you which one you are. If the answer is that AI would not pay for itself yet, that is a perfectly good outcome and it costs you one conversation.

Will a new website help if most of our work comes from referrals?

It helps, though not in the way people expect. Referral work still gets checked online before anyone picks up the phone. The site's job is to confirm that you are real, currently operating, and doing the kind of work the referrer described. That means current service information, a phone number someone answers, and photographs of actual projects in the valley instead of stock images of a downtown that could be anywhere. For most Kelowna businesses that is a small, fast, accurate site rather than a large one.
