IT support & managed IT services in Nanaimo

Most of what managed IT involves does not require anyone in the room. Microsoft 365 and email, accounts and passwords, device management, patching, monitoring and backups are all handled remotely from Greater Vancouver, and a Nanaimo business gets the same response as one in Burnaby. What distance changes is physical work. Server swaps, network builds and new cabling are planned in advance and batched into a scheduled visit, and where a job is mostly cabling we subcontract a local trade rather than pretend otherwise.

Nanaimo

IT priorities for Nanaimo businesses

  • Remote-first support, so an everyday problem never waits on a ferry sailing
  • Battery backup and clean, tested restarts for servers and network equipment after winter windstorms
  • Off-site backups and a written continuity plan, shaped by storms that have taken out both power and water here
  • Spare devices and standard builds held on your premises, so a failed laptop is swapped locally instead of couriered
  • Backup internet by LTE or satellite for premises out toward Cedar, Yellow Point and Extension

Business districts

  • Downtown & Old City Quarter
  • Nanaimo Harbour & Assembly Wharf
  • Departure Bay & Brechin Hill
  • Northfield & Mostar Road
  • Woodgrove & North Nanaimo
  • University District
  • Harewood & Chase River
  • Duke Point Industrial Park

What shapes IT here

The Strait of Georgia separates Nanaimo from the mainland, and everything physical arrives by ferry or plane: BC Ferries from Departure Bay and Duke Point, the Hullo passenger catamaran from the downtown harbour, and Nanaimo Airport south of the city at Cassidy. That shapes how IT gets done here. Remote support is the normal way of working, and anything needing hands on equipment is planned around a sailing. Winter windstorms are the other constant. The December 2018 solstice storm cut power and knocked Nanaimo's water treatment plant offline; the November 2024 windstorm left Nanaimo among the hardest-hit communities on the Island. Fibre is common through the built-up areas, but properties out toward Cedar, Yellow Point and Extension often make do with less.

Vancouver Island

Remote-first, because a ferry is not a support model

Island businesses get the same managed service as the mainland — monitored and patched devices, secure accounts, tested backups and a help desk that answers — delivered remotely, which for almost every request is faster than anyone could arrive. Network installs, cabling and hardware work are planned as a scheduled trip or coordinated with a local trade, and we tell you which before you engage us.

Process

How it works

  1. Consultation

A conversation about your team, systems and pain points, and what you want technology to do for the business.

  2. Assessment & onboarding

We document every device, account and licence, secure admin access and fix the urgent risks first.

  3. Day-to-day support

Help desk, monitoring, patching and backups run in the background while your team gets on with work.

  4. Regular planning

Periodic reviews of what's working, upcoming renewals and replacements, and a budget you can plan around.

Pricing

How pricing works

Managed IT agreements are typically priced per user or per device each month, based on the services included. After an assessment, we put the scope and monthly price in writing, including what counts as a separate project.

Software licences such as Microsoft 365 and any hardware are listed separately from the support fee, so you can see exactly what each costs. Our guide to managed IT services costs explains the common pricing models.

  • Number of users and devices
  • Servers, sites and network equipment to manage
  • Security and backup tools included
  • Compliance or industry requirements
  • How much on-site support you need
  • Clean-up needed during onboarding

FAQ

Managed IT Services in Nanaimo: questions

You're based in Greater Vancouver. How does that actually work for a business in Nanaimo?

Honestly, and by design. Everyday support — Microsoft 365, email, accounts, security, backups, device setup and the problems that surface on a Tuesday morning — is delivered remotely, and distance makes no difference to any of it. What distance does change is physical work. Reaching Nanaimo means a ferry from Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen, so on-site attendance is arranged in advance rather than called out on the day. We plan hardware, server and network work into scheduled visits, hold spare equipment on your premises so common failures can be swapped locally, and bring in a local trade when a job is mostly cabling.

What happens if our server fails on a Friday and the next sailing is full?

That scenario is the reason we try not to leave a business depending on one box. Where it makes sense, email, files and line-of-business systems move to cloud services, and a dead server stops being an emergency. Where a server has to stay on site, its configuration is documented and backed up off-Island, so it can be rebuilt onto spare or replacement hardware without waiting for anyone to cross the strait. We also keep a labelled spare or two in your comms cupboard for the failures that are most likely — a switch, a firewall, a laptop.

Winter storms here take out power. What should we have in place before the next one?

Three things, in order. Battery backup on the server, firewall and switch, sized to ride out a short outage and shut everything down cleanly in a long one. Backups held off the Island and tested by actually restoring something, not by checking a green tick. And a written page naming who calls whom, how staff reach email and files from home, and which systems can simply wait. The December 2018 windstorm cut power and took the city's water treatment plant offline. November 2024 put Nanaimo among the hardest-hit communities on the Island. Neither was a surprise, and neither will be the last.

What's included in managed IT services?

Typically a help desk for staff, device management and patching, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace administration, security tools, backups, vendor coordination and regular planning. Projects such as office moves, server replacements or migrations are usually scoped separately. Every agreement we write lists exactly what's covered.

What is a managed service provider (MSP)?

A managed service provider is an outside company that takes ongoing responsibility for your IT for a monthly fee — help desk, security, device management, backups and Microsoft 365 — instead of billing by the hour when something breaks. The point is that the provider is paid to prevent problems, not to fix them after the fact. For most small businesses an MSP is the IT department they would otherwise have to hire.

How is managed IT different from calling someone when something breaks?

Break-fix support is paid by the hour when there's a problem, so nobody is responsible for preventing the next one. Managed IT covers ongoing maintenance, security and support for a monthly fee, which makes costs predictable and rewards fewer problems. Our managed IT vs. break-fix guide covers when each makes sense.

Can you work alongside our in-house IT person?

Yes. Many growing companies have one internal IT person who is stretched thin. We can take on the help desk, security tooling, after-hours projects or strategic planning, while they stay focused on the work only an insider can do.
