IT support & managed IT services in Duncan

We support Duncan businesses remotely from Greater Vancouver. Microsoft 365, email, security, patching, device management, servers and cloud systems are all handled over the network, and that is how the large majority of requests get resolved — usually sooner than a van could arrive. When work needs hands on equipment, such as a new office, a server replacement or a network rebuild, the visit is planned in advance and scoped so everything gets done in one trip. For cabling and structured wiring we subcontract a local trade.

Duncan

IT priorities for Duncan businesses

  • Remote monitoring, patching and support that closes most issues the day they are raised
  • Cloud file storage, email and phones, so a Malahat closure or a power cut does not stop the work
  • A second internet path — fixed wireless, LTE or satellite — for offices and rural sites where fibre stops short
  • Battery backup on servers, firewalls and switches, and a clean restart after windstorm outages
  • A spare switch or firewall kept on site and configurations documented, so a failure is a swap rather than a wait

Business districts

  • Downtown Duncan & City Square
  • Canada Avenue & Trunk Road
  • Beverly Corners
  • Cowichan Commons & Drinkwater Road
  • Boys Road & Allenby industrial area
  • Bell McKinnon
  • Whippletree Junction
  • Cowichan Bay Village

What shapes IT here

Duncan sits on Highway 1 between Victoria and Nanaimo, and from the mainland it is a ferry sailing plus a drive: Swartz Bay and over the Malahat from the south, or Duke Point and the run down from Nanaimo. The Malahat is the only highway link to Greater Victoria, and it does close. In the November 2021 storm the highway failed at Tunnel Hill and a slide shut Allenby Road in Duncan. Winter southerlies bring down trees and power lines across the valley, as the December 2018 windstorm did island-wide. Summers run dry enough that Cowichan River flows are managed at the Lake Cowichan weir. Fibre reaches much of town, then thins out toward Cowichan Lake, Cowichan Station and the islands.

Vancouver Island

Remote-first, because a ferry is not a support model

Island businesses get the same managed service as the mainland — monitored and patched devices, secure accounts, tested backups and a help desk that answers — delivered remotely, which for almost every request is faster than anyone could arrive. Network installs, cabling and hardware work are planned as a scheduled trip or coordinated with a local trade, and we tell you which before you engage us.

Process

How it works

  1. Consultation

A conversation about your team, systems and pain points, and what you want technology to do for the business.

  2. Assessment & onboarding

We document every device, account and licence, secure admin access and fix the urgent risks first.

  3. Day-to-day support

Help desk, monitoring, patching and backups run in the background while your team gets on with work.

  4. Regular planning

Periodic reviews of what's working, upcoming renewals and replacements, and a budget you can plan around.

Pricing

How pricing works

Managed IT agreements are typically priced per user or per device each month, based on the services included. After an assessment, we put the scope and monthly price in writing, including what counts as a separate project.

Software licences such as Microsoft 365 and any hardware are listed separately from the support fee, so you can see exactly what each costs. Our guide to managed IT services costs explains the common pricing models.

  • Number of users and devices
  • Servers, sites and network equipment to manage
  • Security and backup tools included
  • Compliance or industry requirements
  • How much on-site support you need
  • Clean-up needed during onboarding

FAQ

Managed IT Services in Duncan: questions

You are based in Greater Vancouver. How does that work for a business in Duncan?

Honestly, with the distance treated as a fact rather than glossed over. Day-to-day support, Microsoft 365, security, backups, servers and cloud systems are handled remotely, and that covers the large majority of what comes up — none of it depends on being in the Cowichan Valley. When work needs hands on equipment, the trip is planned in advance: a ferry sailing and the drive over the Malahat or down from Duke Point, scheduled so everything gets done in one visit. For cabling we subcontract a local trade. What we do not offer is a same-day call-out.

Our office is in North Cowichan, not the City of Duncan. Does that change anything?

No. The city boundary runs tight around the downtown core, so Beverly Corners, the Boys Road and Allenby industrial area, Cowichan Commons and the Bell McKinnon area all sit outside it, and plenty of valley business is further out again in Chemainus, Crofton, Maple Bay, Cowichan Bay or Mill Bay. Remote support does not notice the difference. For planned on-site work the only thing that changes is the drive at this end, and we will say so if a site is remote enough that it is worth combining the visit with other work.

What happens if a server or firewall fails and nobody can be there that day?

We plan for it instead of hoping. Where it makes sense, the systems that matter move to cloud services, so a failed box on site is not a stopped business. For equipment that has to stay local, we keep a spare switch or firewall in your cupboard, keep configurations documented and backed up, and can walk someone on your team through a swap over the phone. Hardware warranties with next-business-day parts on the Island cover the rest, and we book a visit for the work that genuinely needs us in the room.

What's included in managed IT services?

Typically a help desk for staff, device management and patching, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace administration, security tools, backups, vendor coordination and regular planning. Projects such as office moves, server replacements or migrations are usually scoped separately. Every agreement we write lists exactly what's covered.

What is a managed service provider (MSP)?

A managed service provider is an outside company that takes ongoing responsibility for your IT for a monthly fee — help desk, security, device management, backups and Microsoft 365 — instead of billing by the hour when something breaks. The point is that the provider is paid to prevent problems, not to fix them after the fact. For most small businesses an MSP is the IT department they would otherwise have to hire.

How is managed IT different from calling someone when something breaks?

Break-fix support is paid by the hour when there's a problem, so nobody is responsible for preventing the next one. Managed IT covers ongoing maintenance, security and support for a monthly fee, which makes costs predictable and rewards fewer problems. Our managed IT vs. break-fix guide covers when each makes sense.

Can you work alongside our in-house IT person?

Yes. Many growing companies have one internal IT person who is stretched thin. We can take on the help desk, security tooling, after-hours projects or strategic planning, while they stay focused on the work only an insider can do.
